The NST (Nutrition Support Team) Development Project - a joint project of PHILSPEN and Fresenius-Kabi Philippines

(Participating Hospitals)

Mechanics of the nutrition support team development program contest:

  1. All participating hospitals will provide a report on the progress of their NST development program to PHILSPEN, with the coordination of the staff of Fresenius Kabi Philippines.
  2. The reports will cover each or any of the following areas:
    • Nutrition surveillance data (nutrition screening and assessment) together with the compliance data from either the nurses or dietitians regarding anthropometric data, fluid and nutrient balance recording
    • Nutrition assessment recommendations and response of the attending medical staff
    • Data or report on the identified “nutritionally at risk” patients
    • Coverage of the “nutritionally at risk” patients (how many are “actually seen” over the identified “needed to be seen”)
    • Nutrition care plan implementation status
    • Enteral and parenteral nutrition practice as suggested in the clinical nutrition practice guidelines
    • Monitoring data accomplishment as to:
      1. Weight taking
      2. Nutrient and fluid balance
      3. Calorie counting
      4. Nitrogen balance
      5. Number of hospital days
      6. Cost analysis
  3. The basis of grading will be the following:
  4. Key Performance Indicators

    % Weight

    • Number of patients screened vs. total admissions

    24%

    • Completion of required data (height, weight, and SGA)

    24%

    • Number of patients at risk vs. number of patients referred to the NST

    14%

    • Number of patients given a calorie count from the patients referred to the NST

    14%

    • Number of patients reaching ≥ 75% of daily calorie and protein goals

    19%

    • Number of patients given enteral/parenteral nutrition or combined

    5%

    Total

    100%

  5. The final assessment will be given by the selected members of the contest committee of both PHILSPEN and Fresenius Kabi Philippines. Nobody knows who the members of the committee are in order to avoid “influence peddling”.
  6. The initial report(s) will be presented during the PHILSPEN pre-convention on November 2009 or an appointed time as agreed by PHILSPEN and Fresenius-Kabi Philippines.
  7. The report may be a case report, statistics discussion, or consensus report by the participating institution. The important issue is how the nutrition support team development program was initiated and how far the implementation has gone. The weight stated in the key performance indicators are guides, not hard and fast values. The ultimate judgement will be from the contest committee members.
  8. In the meantime, the KPIs will be monitored quarterly post the presentation as the reports are to be sent manually via parcel to PHILSPEN or through email.
