The goal of this program is to promote best practice in hospital care delivery through the institution of an effective clinical nutrition program implemented by a Nutrition Support Team or NST.

Essentially all the components of the nutrition care delivery process are to be implemented and the results reported through this website so that all will know that total patient care is not only "best practice", but it is also implementable through the zeal and dedication of these participating institutions.

From "Nutrition Support" to "Clinical Nutrition"

There is a need to make some changes in the terminology we are using in the practice of clinical nutrition in order to be clearer in the scope of practice of nutrition management. We have decided to adopt the term "clinical nutrition team" from that of "nutrition support team" due to the following reasons:

  • The scope of nutrition management we are giving to the patient, especially the critical care patient, has expanded, it is not only in support of either the patient's capacity to weather the disease process or support the effect of other therapeutic modalities, but NOW one of active intervention/management. As emphasized by Dr. Paul Wischmeyer in the last PENSA 2007 congress here in Manila, Philippines: the more appropriate term for nutrition support would be more of "nutrition therapy" since nutrition care has now been recognized to be as important as medicines or therapeutic interventions. Hence the proposed term "clinical nutrition" for the whole management process.

  • The role of the "clinical nutrition specialist", therefore, is more of an active member of the management team, directing all aspects of nutrition care delivery from delineating the patient's nutritional status to that of implementing the nutrition care plan for the patient. He/she does not wait anymore if any aspect of the nutrition care process has to be done first before any other therapeutic regimen.

  • Thus we are proposing that the following terms be used:

    • "Clinical Nutrition Practice" for the nutrition management description

    • "Clinical Nutrition Team" for the nutrition support team

    • "Clinical Nutrition Specialist" for the individual practitioners of clinical nutrition.
