A Clinical Paper Contest

This is a paper contest open to all practicing physicians, residents and fellows, registered-nutritionist dietitians, registered nurses, and pharmacists of duly recognized Medical Centers in the Philippines.
The paper covers observations of clinical experience that will range from clinical reports of one or several patients, reviews encompassing particular areas of clinical practice, or a well-designed prospective or retrospective studies describing practical results that are immediately applicable to patient care.
It will be the first Nutrition Paper Contest launched by Nestle HealthCare Nutrition (under the umbrella of Nestle Nutrition Institute) and co-sponsored by the Philippine Society of Enteral and Parenteral Nutrition.

WHO ARE QUALIFIED TO PARTICIPATE? | back
- The 2008 Nutrition Paper Contest is open to all bonafide physicians, residents and fellows, registered-nutritionist dietitians, registered nurses, and pharmacists of any duly recognized Medical Center in the Philippines.
- Each hospital department, institute or center may nominate 2 or more research papers to enter in the competition.
- Published papers are excluded. All other papers, including those already presented locally, nationally, or internationally, are eligible for the contest.
- The material is base on basic or clinical research, relative to nutrition and metabolic support that helps improve patient outcomes.
- The research should be on enteral nutrition using Peptide-base diet in any clinical condition
- Five copies of the research paper should be submitted to Nestle Nutrition via mail or Nestle Nutrition Representatives in the area on or before May 15, 2009.
- All entries should comply with the Submission Guidelines.

The paper must be typewritten in Times New Roman font, size 12, double-spaced on standard A4 paper.
It should include the following in chronological order:
GRADING CRITERIA | back
All abstracts will be evaluated by an independent panel of nutrition experts appointed by Philspen and Nestle Nutrition.
All reviewers are blinded to the abstract authors identifying information throughout the entire review and grading process, and measures are in place to avoid conflict of interest.
Five papers will be chosen as finalists for oral presentation base on the following criteria:
Relevance and uniqueness of the study to the field of nutrition and metabolic support (30%)
Quality of the research design and methodology (20%)
Validity and sufficiency of the data (20%)
Relevance of the conclusions to the data (20%)
Presentation and organization (10%)
Finalist from the provinces will receive air transportation, hotel accommodations for 2 nights, and airport transfers all arranged by Nestle Nutriton for free.
All finalist will sign the Finalist Agreement which stipulates the following: Nestle Nutrition and Philspen reserves the rights to exclusive publication of the research paper with proper notification to the principal author. Research results should not be shared to any companies with competing products. Author/s may independently publish the paper with proper notification to the sponsors.
Failure to sign and submit the Finalist agreement by May 21, 2009 will mean disqualification and another finalist will be chosen.

The principal authors of the TWO top scoring paper will be given the “Nutrition Investigator of the Year” award.
The two principal authors awarded with the “Nutrition Investigator of the Year Award” for their research work will each receive a scholarship to attend the 8th Annual Nestlé Clinical Nutrition Course, June 2009 in Laussane, Switzerland.
Scholarship includes attendance to the 6-day Nestlé Clinical Nutrition Course; roundtrip air transportation from a major metropolitan airport nearest recipient’s residence to Switzerland, hotel accommodations for 7 nights/8 days (one standard room), all course participant group meals; $500 spending allowance for non-group meals and airport/hotel transfers.
Winners must be able to travel on dates specified or scholarship will be forfeited and another next ranking investigator may be selected. Travel restrictions and blackout periods may apply. Expenses not specifically stated are the sole responsibility of the recipient.
Scholarship is non-transferable and no cash substitutions for scholarship will be permitted. Sponsor reserves the right to substitute scholarship prize of equal or greater value.
The other top 3 ranking papers will receive the “Abstract of Distinction” award, and $500 prize money.
All winning papers will be published in the PHILSPEN Online Journal of Clinical Nutrition
Conflict of Interest Policy: back
Employees of Nestle Nutrition Phils., their immediate families, medical consultants officially hired by the company, and research collaborators with Nestle with on-going research are not eligible to apply.
Fellows & relatives of the judging committee as identified by Philspen are also not eligible to join the research contest.
