A Clinical Paper Contest

This is a paper contest open to all practicing physicians, residents and fellows, registered nutritionist dieticians, registered nurses and pharmacists of duly recognized medical centers in the Philippines
The paper covers observations of clinical experiences that will range from reports covering clinical nutrition management of one or several patients, or reflection of clinical nutrition practices in respective institutions.
Qualification: Top
- Open to all practicing physicians, residents and fellows, registered nutritionist dieticians, registered nurses and pharmacists of duly recognized medical centers in the Philippines
- Each hospital department, institute or center may nominate 2 or more research papers to enter in the competition
- Published papers are excluded. All other papers including those already presented locally, nationally or internationally are eligible for the contest
- The material can be basic or clinical research, relative to nutrition metabolic support that helps improve patient outcomes
- The research should specifically be on enteral nutrition using 50% whey based diet with or without fiber in any clinical condition.
- All entries should comply with the submission guidelines for written presentation
Submission Guidelines (Written Presentation) Top
- The paper must be typewritten in Times New Roman font size 12, double spaced on standard A4 paper
- The paper must be written in English
- It should include the following in chronological order:
- Title/ Abstract
- Abstract must have a short, specific title which indicates the nature of the investigation but should not describe research in which the chemical identity or source of reagent is proprietary or cannot be revealed.
- Abstract should include brief sections labelled by the following, bolder section headers each beginning on a new line that clearly and concisely describe:
- Background
- Objectives
- Materials and Methods
- Results
- Conclusions
- Authors
- All investigators contributing to the work must be listed. Name of the principal investigator should be underlined
- Include credentials and institution name for each author
- Each author must read and comply with the paper’s conflict of interest policy. Commercial disclosures are required of all authors listed on the abstract
- Background

- Results
- Provide sufficient detail in order to support conclusions
- Tables, graphs and figures are permitted
- Conclusions

Grading Criteria: Top
- All entries will be evaluated by an independent panel of nutrition experts appointed by PhilSPEN and Nestle Nutrition using the following criteria:
- Relevance and uniqueness of the study in the field of nutrition and metabolic support - 30%
- Quality of research design and methodology – 20%
- Validity and sufficiency of data – 20%
- Relevance of the conclusions to the data – 20%
- Presentation and organization – 10%
- Five papers will be chosen as the Finalists for the oral presentation. These papers will be graded by the panel of judges and will comprise 70% of the final score. The remaining 30% of the final score will come from the oral presentation on November 4, 2010.
- Reviewers are blinded to the papers’ identifying information throughout the entire review and grading process and measures are in place to avoid conflict of interest
Oral Presentation Guidelines for November 4, 2010 (pre-judging – no announcement of winners)
Nestle Office, Makati at 8:00 am-12nn
- Presentation must be in powerpoint file (.ppt not .pptx).
- Each finalist is given 15 minutes to present and 5 minutes to answer all questions by the panel of judges
- Order of presentation will be determined on the day of presentation. All finalists are expected to be at the venue at 8:00 am to draw lots for their order of presentation and to give their powerpoint presentation to the organizers.
- Each finalist is to be judged according to the following criteria:
- Manner of presentation (organized and logical presentation / good stage presence / clear delivery/ manner of speech) - 30%
- Ability to answer questions (accurate/ concise/ logical/ clear) – 50%
- Use of time (Presented within 15 minutes) – 10%
- Use of Audiovisual aids (enhanced effectiveness of presentation/ technically well-prepared) – 10 %
- The final score consists of 70% from written presentation and 30% from oral presentation. Two finalists with the highest final scores will be declared the top 2 winners. In the event of very tight competition, the results of the oral presentation on November 9, 2010 will be the basis for the determination the final winners.
- Announcement of the final winners will be done during the PHILSPEN convention on November 9, 2010 10:30-1:30 pm.
Oral Presentation Guidelines for November 9, 2010 (announcement of winners)
Manila Diamond Hotel at 10:30am -1:30 pm
- All finalists who presented during the November 4, 2010 pre-judging event must present on November 9, 2010 during the plenary session of the PHILSPEN convention.
- This event is crucial particularly in the event of a very tight competition. The results of the oral presentation on November 9, 2010 will be the basis for the determination the final winners.
- Presentation must be in powerpoint file (.ppt not .pptx).
- Each finalist is given 15 minutes to present. There will be NO question and answer portion during the presentation.
- Order of presentation will be determined on the day of presentation. All finalists are expected to be at the venue 30 minutes before the event to draw lots for their order of presentation and to give their powerpoint presentation to the organizer.
- Final winners will be announced after all the finalists have presented.
